Running npm install on a Server with 1GB Memory using Swap

Yes, it can be done smoothly, and swap space is our savior here.

So, what exactly is swap space, and how can it help? Think of swap space as an overflow area for your RAM. When your server's physical memory gets filled up, the system can move some of the inactive data into this swap space on your hard disk, freeing up RAM for more critical tasks. It’s slower than RAM, but it can prevent those dreaded out-of-memory errors that can crash your operations.

Let's walk through how to set up and optimize swap space on your server.

First, you'll want to see if swap space is already configured. You can do this with the command:

sudo swapon --show

This command will display any active swap areas. If there's none, or if it's too small, you'll want to create or resize your swap space.

Next, ensure you have enough disk space to create a swap file. The command df -h gives you a human-readable output of your disk usage. Ideally, you want to have at least 1GB of free space.

Assuming you have the space, let’s create a swap file. You can allocate a 1GB swap file with:

sudo fallocate -l 1G /swapfile

If fallocate isn’t available, you can use dd as an alternative method to create a swap file.

To secure your swap file, change its permissions to prevent access from unauthorized users:

sudo chmod 600 /swapfile

Then, format it as swap space:

sudo mkswap /swapfile

And enable it:

sudo swapon /swapfile

Your server now has additional virtual memory to use, but we’re not done yet.

To make sure your server uses the swap file even after a reboot, add it to your /etc/fstab file:

echo '/swapfile none swap sw 0 0' | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab

For a balanced system, you’ll want to adjust how often the system uses swap space. This is controlled by the swappiness value. Check the current setting with:

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Setting it to 15 is a good starting point:

sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=15

To make this change permanent, add it to /etc/sysctl.conf:

echo 'vm.swappiness=15' | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.conf

Similarly, for vfs_cache_pressure, which controls how aggressively the system reclaims memory used for caching, a setting of 60 can be beneficial:

sudo sysctl vm.vfs_cache_pressure=60

And again, make this permanent:

echo 'vm.vfs_cache_pressure=60' | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.conf

By now, your server should be better equipped to handle memory-intensive operations like npm install. Remember, swap is a temporary workaround for insufficient RAM. If you find yourself needing it often, consider upgrading your server's physical memory.

Training multibillion-parameter models poses significant challenges, particularly when it comes to GPU memory. Even with high-end GPUs like the NVIDIA A100 or H100, which boast 80 GB of GPU RAM, handling 32-bit full-precision models often exceeds their capacity. So, how do we manage to train these massive models efficiently? Let’s start with the first technique: quantization.

Quantization is a process that reduces the precision of model weights, thereby decreasing the memory required to load and train the model. Essentially, it involves projecting higher-precision floating-point numbers into a lower-precision target set, which significantly cuts down the memory footprint.

But how does quantization actually work? Let’s break it down into three steps:

  1. Scaling Factor Calculation: First, determine a scaling factor based on the range of source (high-precision) and target (low-precision) numbers.
  2. Projection: Next, map the high-precision numbers to the lower-precision set using the scaling factor.

This approach encourages us to challenge assumptions and build solutions from the ground up, rather than relying on what has been done before. Thinkers like Aristotle introduced this method, but it’s modern innovators like Elon Musk who have popularized it in recent times.

Unlike traditional reasoning, which often relies on analogies or past experiences, first principle thinking delves deeper. It seeks to uncover core truths that are universally applicable.

To understand this better, let’s consider Elon Musk’s approach to reducing the cost of space travel. Traditionally, space rockets were single-use and extremely expensive. Most aerospace companies accepted this as a given. However, Musk questioned this assumption. He broke the problem down to its core elements by asking fundamental questions:

  1. What are the fundamental materials needed to build a rocket?
  2. How much do these materials cost in the open market?
  3. How can we design a rocket that maximizes reusability?

By stripping the problem down to these first principles, SpaceX was able to develop reusable rockets, significantly lowering the cost of space travel.

So, how can we apply first principle thinking in our own lives? Here are four essential steps:

  1. Identify and Define the Problem: Clearly pinpoint the issue you’re trying to solve. Be specific about your goals and the obstacles in your way.
  2. Break Down the Problem: Dissect the problem into its fundamental components. Ask what you know for sure about this issue.
  3. Challenge Assumptions: Analyze each component critically. Why are things done this way? Are there alternative perspectives or methods?
  4. Rebuild from the Ground Up: Use the insights gained to reconstruct your solution based on the fundamental truths you’ve identified.

What makes first principle thinking so powerful? Here are a few key benefits:

  1. Innovation: By challenging assumptions, you often uncover groundbreaking solutions that others might miss.
  2. Clarity and Focus: This approach helps you understand the problem deeply and eliminate distractions, allowing you to focus on what truly matters.
  3. Improved Problem-Solving Skills: It enhances your ability to think critically and develop structured solutions for complex issues.

With over 7.6 million digital subscribers, the Times has demonstrated how a legacy brand can thrive in the digital age. This transformation is a textbook example of how to execute a digital strategy effectively. Today, we’ll explore how the Times’ digital transformation aligns with the six critical success factors for digital transformations: an integrated strategy, modular technology and data platform, strong leadership commitment, deploying high-caliber talent, an agile governance mindset, and effective monitoring of progress.

Let's start with the first critical success factor: an integrated strategy with clear transformation goals.

The New York Times set out a clear vision to become a digital-first organization while maintaining their commitment to high-quality journalism. Former CEO Mark Thompson emphasized that simply transferring print strategies to digital wouldn't suffice; instead, they needed a subscription-based model. The Times developed a detailed roadmap with prioritized initiatives, such as launching new digital products like NYT Cooking and podcasts, and enhancing user engagement through data-driven insights.

To achieve this, the Times prioritized understanding their customers better and iterating on their digital offerings. They listened to feedback from users who had canceled their print subscriptions in favor of digital and continually experimented with new digital products and features to meet evolving reader needs.

Next, we look at the importance of a business-led modular technology and data platform.

The New York Times invested heavily in modernizing their IT infrastructure. They moved to a more modular technology platform, integrating data across systems to support seamless digital experiences. The transition to platforms like Google BigQuery and the adoption of agile development practices allowed for frequent updates and improvements.

A pivotal move was the creation of a dedicated internal team, Beta, which operated like a startup within the organization. This team experimented with new products and features in an agile manner. For instance, the NYT Cooking app became a significant success, attracting millions of users through continuous improvements and iterations based on user feedback.

The third success factor is strong leadership commitment from the CEO through middle management.

The transformation at the Times was driven from the top down, starting with Mark Thompson and continued by current CEO Meredith Kopit Levien. Thompson and executive editor Dean Baquet championed the digital-first strategy, ensuring that the entire leadership team was aligned with this vision.

Thompson’s initiative, Project 2020, focused on doubling digital revenue and emphasized the importance of digital content quality. They made strategic hires to bolster their data and analytics capabilities, enabling them to leverage customer insights to drive subscriptions. They also fostered a culture of continuous learning and adaptation, ensuring that their teams could keep pace with technological advancements.

The fifth factor is adopting an agile governance mindset.

The Times adopted an agile governance mindset, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to pivot based on learnings and changing contexts. This approach was essential in fostering innovation and ensuring that the organization could quickly respond to new opportunities and challenges.

The decision to create the Beta team exemplifies this mindset. By allowing this team to operate independently and make rapid decisions, the Times could test and iterate on new ideas without being bogged down by traditional bureaucratic processes. This agile approach was crucial in launching successful products like The Daily podcast and the Cooking app.

Lastly, effective monitoring of progress towards defined outcomes is essential.

The Times established robust mechanisms for monitoring their progress towards digital transformation goals. They used data-driven metrics to track subscriber growth, engagement, and retention, ensuring that they could make informed decisions and adjust strategies as needed.

Their use of advanced analytics to understand user behavior and preferences enabled the Times to refine their subscription model continually. By closely monitoring how users interacted with their content, they could tailor their offerings to maximize engagement and conversion rates.

The New York Times' digital transformation offers valuable lessons for any organization seeking to navigate the digital landscape. The Power of Personas and How Might We Questions in User-Centric Design

In our quest to deliver user-centric solutions, understanding our audience is paramount. Two concepts that have resonated deeply with me are the creation of detailed personas and the structured use of "how might we" questions. These approaches have been instrumental in addressing our client's challenges and needs, ensuring our solutions are both innovative and relevant.

Let’s start with personas. A persona is a fictional character that represents a specific user type within a targeted demographic. Recently, creating a detailed persona for Alexa Tan allowed us to deeply understand and empathize with our target audience's needs, motivations, and pain points. This persona became a guiding light for our solutions, making them more user-centric and user-friendly. By focusing on Alexa's specific characteristics and behaviors, we could tailor our strategies and designs to meet her needs effectively.

In my previous role as a Technical Lead at HSBC, personas were invaluable. One memorable project involved enhancing mobile payment solutions. We developed detailed personas for various stakeholders, such as Shopee users participating in midnight sales in Malaysia. This approach enabled us to tailor our core banking solutions to meet specific needs, significantly enhancing client satisfaction. By having a clear and focused understanding of different user groups, we could design solutions that truly resonated with them.

Now, let’s talk about "how might we" questions. This tool is essential for systematically generating and organizing ideas by focusing on specific enablers, such as technology. "How might we" questions foster structured brainstorming sessions, leading to innovative solutions tailored to our persona’s needs. These questions help us explore various possibilities and prioritize the most impactful ideas.

During my time at HSBC, the "how might we" statement proved particularly effective. One project aimed at reducing transaction failure rates utilized this approach. By framing our challenges as questions, we systematically explored innovative solutions within the user journey, including using different browsers and examining logs at various times. This structured approach ensured our solutions were aligned with regulatory requirements and technological capabilities, leading to successful project outcomes.

In my current role as a Solution Architect at Thought Machine, personas remain fundamental. They help us deeply understand our clients' unique needs and challenges. By creating detailed personas, we tailor our solutions more precisely, ensuring our core banking systems address specific pain points and deliver maximum value. For instance, developing personas for different banking users, such as young Vietnamese consumers, guides us in customizing features that meet their strategic objectives, like enabling QR code payments for buying coffee.

The "how might we" statement continues to be instrumental in brainstorming and prioritizing innovative solutions. By framing challenges as questions, I lead my team in systematically exploring and organizing ideas. This comprehensive approach to problem-solving is particularly useful in developing new functionalities for our Vault core banking product or proposing enhancements to existing systems.

Integrating personas and "how might we" questions into our project workflows has proven to be transformative. These concepts ensure we remain focused on the user's needs and challenges, driving innovation and delivering user-centric solutions. By applying these principles, we enhance our ability to create impactful, client-centric solutions that drive business success and client satisfaction.
